We like to give something back. Who doesn’t? In March 2009 we chose Kivuli Trust as the good cause we would directly support and throw the weight of Renaissance Pubs behind. Why Kivuli? We were simply inspired by the incredible work that Kivuli does to change the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in the world. In addition, it’s a small, efficiently run charity - somewhere we knew that every penny we contributed would make a real difference.
Kivuli is focused on the education of children with physical and mental disabilities and their acceptance into wider African society. Renaissance Pubs covers the day-to-day costs of Kivuli House, a boarding house for 32 children in Gilgil Primary School, Kenya.
There are children at Gilgil who had spent their entire lives within the confines of their huts. Now they have teachers and friends, are learning basic skills (e.g. planting and weaving), and are no longer hidden away by their parents in shame. It is no exaggeration to say that Kivuli has utterly transformed the lives of these ‘forgotten children’.
This summer, to help raise funds for the expansion of the house (which will double its capacity to 64 children), we hosted two alfresco pub quizzes in the Avalon's garden. We are thrilled to say that our customers helped raise over £5,000, a great achievement.
In the coming months we plan to hold more fund raising events, such as quizzes and special dinners, in order to continue making a difference to these children’s lives, giving them access to what we take for granted – food, drink and respect in a safe, nurturing environment.
