While named after an infamous politician who was better known for his rakish ways than public policy, the Bolingbroke is thankfully free from scandal. Instead, it’s a reliably laid-back neighbourhood gastro-pub that focuses on unfussy seasonal fare and a carefully executed air of understated ambiance.

The interior is that predictable gastro-formula: polished wooden floor, bare brick walls and loads of natural light via a glorious glass roof (just wait for summer)! Fortunately, the food – and drinks – are anything but average.

Classic British with a dash of inventive flair to avoid being boring, head chef Massimo Tebaldi is not afraid of keeping things seasonal (and sustainable) to offset the need for carbon-intensive food. So expect herb-crusted coley not cod, seasonal soups and a marvellous Somerset brie wellington for veggies who can’t face another sloppy mushroom risotto. Drinks follow a similarly sustainable theme, where British ales, west country ciders and a few fragrant Chapel Down wines shine among a considered list.

As for pudding, we’ve no idea – we were too stuffed from a slip-off-the-bone Welsh lamb leg. Judging from the audible moans over one patron’s homemade chocolate fondant though, The Bolingbroke is one of those rare gastro pubs where style, and substance, are both clearly chalked up as the daily special.

The Michelin guide

"Smart, local popular pub whose more diminutive size adds charm. Glass-roofed dining room sees flavoursome dishes with a mostly British accent; more choice at dinner. Child Friendly "

"Grown-up pub operation, with generous pricing, a handsome bar area and a traditional-looking dining room serving the likes of lamb stew and apple and rhubarb crumble. Try for a spot by the fire."

"Located in the buzzy area known as Between the Commons, it also caters for younger diners, with a sophisticated children’s menu, hearty portions of books and crayons, and, best of all, cakes they can decorate themselves."

Harper's Bazaar

"The bar staff mix a gusty gin and tonic and the wine list is fabulous too."

"The staff care about the food and the diners, and the space couldn’t be prettier."

SW Magazine

"How refreshing to revel in eating out at a restaurant where the chef isn’t slavishly watching his portion control: the portions at The Bolingbroke are gloriously abundant, even more impressive when the ingredients are evidently sourced from top British producers."

"The modern British menu prides itself on using some of the UK's finest produce, and trust me, The Bolingbroke has done this country proud! Wild Bay Devon crab salad with fried duck egg was a perfect combination of rich and delicate flavours."

Lady Blonde

"British to its core, it features an al fresco terrace and a striking bar and dining area. With a strong but succinct international wine list, as well as a classic cocktail list, this new pub is one that Battersea can boast about."
